Abbey Woods pupils spellbound by Story Museum project

Children and staff from Abbey Woods Academy have been enjoying some literary fun in recent weeks after the school won funding for an amazing initiative with The Story Museum in Oxford.

Our pupils are taking part in the ‘Spellbound Schools’ partnership, which aims to develop a love of reading and a passion for storytelling in all children.  The Spellbound Schools project is a magical opportunity for the children, allowing them to enjoy a range of immersive storytelling opportunities.

We are delighted that all children will now get to visit The Story Museum for free, with their transport also paid for, where visitors can experience worlds and objects from children’s literature across the ages.

Earlier this month, children in Years 3 to 6 attended a session

aimed at enhancing their language abilities, engaging in social activities, and exploring literary and cultural heritage. Some children even had the chance to write a story sitting at the actual desk owned by CS Lewis, celebrated author of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

As well as the visits to the museum itself, being a Spellbound School means Abbey Woods will also receive extra support with reading for particular groups of children, additional training for teachers, and workshops delivered by visiting Story Museum staff.

Abbey Woods Academy believes that reading with a child every day hugely improves their reading success and is something we encourage. Parents of children in Nursery and Reception are invited to take part in a phonics workshop to learn about how we teach phonics in order for them to support their child at home with their reading.

Headteacher Sophie Charter, said: “Collaborating closely with The Story Museum has been wonderful; our students thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and this partnership has truly sparked their enthusiasm for reading.

“Books offer children a wealth of knowledge and transport them to different worlds. They help children broaden their understanding and empathy by seeing the world from various viewpoints.

“We understand the advantages of nurturing a love for books, and I am looking forward to the continuation of this captivating partnership.”

Mohsen Ojja, CEO of Anthem Schools Trust, said: “I am delighted to hear that Abbey Woods have secured this funding.  Literacy is at the heart of Anthem’s education strategy, and a priority for all our schools.  A lifelong love of, and proficiency in reading should be an entitlement for all children.”
